“From the musical hub that is Portland, Maine comes Morningface, the (sort of) solo project of writer, producer and musician Kate Hummel.
From the off, it’s pretty clear to see who Kate grew up listening to - Outta Space is the very essence of Pete Kember and Jason Pierce; of Spacemen 3 and, to a lesser extent, Spiritualized.
Just listen to ‘Headfucked” - the repeated lyric, the recurring chord change, the slow heroin-drawl- or ‘Bananas’ with its distorted guitar, backward tape looping and melodic synth backing.
Outta Space is a throwback to those heady days of the late ‘80s. There’s even a slide-guitar strewn homage to Pierce called “The Ballad of Jason Spaceman”. Featuring Mark Refoy, ex-Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized, and Anthony Evans of Black Sand, it may be derivative, but Morningface have paid a great homage to those psych-drone days and this writer thanks them for it.”
